In the second round (68th overall) of the 2010 MLB Draft, the Detroit Tigers drafted Smyly. MLB.com ranked Smyly as the 82nd best prospect in baseball heading into the 2012 season, while Baseball America ranked Smyly as the Tigers organization's third-best prospect, behind Jacob Turner and Nick Castellanos.

In addition, In spring training, Smyly competed with Rick Porcello for the fifth place in the starting rotation of the Tigers in 2013.

In a three-team deal that sent Austin Jackson to the Seattle Mariners, Nick Franklin from the Mariners to the Rays, and David Price to the Tigers, the Detroit Tigers traded Smyly to the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31.

The Rays traded Smyly for Mallex Smith, Ryan Yarbrough, and Carlos Vargas to the Seattle Mariners on January 11, 2017. Later, Smyly signed a two-year deal with the Chicago Cubs on December 12, 2017, worth $ 10 million. Recently, the Cubs traded Smyly to New York Rangers.
