Cutter Gauthier was born into a deeply hockey-rooted family in Skellefteå, Sweden, on January 19, 2004. His father, Sean Gauthier, was a Canadian former professional goaltender who introduced him to the sport from an early age.
Although born in Sweden, Cutter holds dual citizenship of Sweden and the United States, listing Scottsdale, Arizona, as his hometown. He was raised on the Pittsburgh Penguins, and his idol was Sidney Crosby, which influenced his style of play and goals.
Cutter Gauthier is a professional ice hockey player who currently plays for the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League. He was drafted fifth overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers and was traded to the Anaheim Ducks on January 8, 2024, in exchange for Jamie Drysdale and a second-round pick in the 2025 draft.
This marked a new chapter in Gauthier's career after a rather contentious departure from the Flyers.
Gauthier's collegiate career at Boston College was nothing short of spectacular. In his freshman season, he amassed 37 points in 32 games, good for All-Rookie team and Third-Team All-Star honors in Hockey East.
As a sophomore, he led the NCAA with 38 goals, which tied the Eagles for the most in a single season. These feats made him a CCM/AHCA First Team All-American, the recipient of the Walter Brown Award, and New England MVP (NEHWA).
Gauthier has represented the United States internationally at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics and in the 2022 IIHF World U18 Championships, collecting three goals and six assists in six games while capturing the silver medal in both.
He was a key player in the 2024 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, acting as an alternate captain and leading the team in scoring with two goals and ten assists as the U.S. won the gold medal.
Gauthier models his game after the likes of Bill Mikkelson, Auston Matthews, and Pierre-Luc Dubois. Having said that, a lot of credit has come his way with respect to his versatility in playing all three forwards and his aptitude for defense. The adjustability he demonstrates in game gives him great ease into an appropriate style that could fit his role from game to game.

Physically, Gauthier stands at 6-foot-3 or 6-foot-2, depending on the source, and weighs 190 pounds. He shoots left-handed, somewhat less common among top players but having absolutely no bearing on his success. His size and strength enable him to be effective both as a scoring and defensive player.
The trade from the Flyers to the Ducks was in controversy since Gauthier refused to sign with Philadelphia. Although he was quite excited once he had been drafted by the Flyers, Gauthier voiced his dissatisfaction with the Flyers later. He skipped the summer development camp presented by the Flyers and then told the team that he did not want to sign with them, thus trading him away.
This decision was criticized in the public eye—Gauthier received death threats, among other things. He denied rumors that his decision had to do with Flyers head coach John Tortorella or former Flyer Kevin Hayes and called it a "private matter.".
After signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks in April 2024, Gauthier scored his first NHL goal on November 15, 2024, against the Detroit Red Wings. This was the first step into his professional life in the NHL, and he is bound to contribute a lot to the Ducks.
During his career, the list of different awards and honors he received as a player is endless. Gauthier was named CCM/AHCA First Team All-American, received the Walter Brown Award, and New England MVP-NEHWA. He was also a Hobey Baker Hat Trick Finalist and Hockey East First Team All-Star. That itself shows just how talented he is on the ice.
Immediately after the trade, there was much scrutiny regarding Gauthier in the public eye. Many in the media and the fans alike questioned his decision to leave the Flyers. Thus, a mix of public views occurred. But Gauthier does not seem to worry about such external factors and keeps on saying that moving out of Philadelphia was a personal decision. Having said that, he will indeed look forward to proving himself and making a good name in the NHL while starting with the Ducks.
