Zemgus Girgensons was born on 5 January 1994, in Riga, Latvia to father Aldis Girgensons but the details about his mother is still unrevealed. As per his nationality, he is Latvian and belongs to the White ethnic group. Further, his star sign is Capricorn.

Girgensons moved to North America in 2009 and played for the Green Mountain Glades in the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL). He moved to the U.S. Hockey League (USHL) the following season and was playing for the Dubuque Fighting Saints. In 2011, with the Fighting Saints, he became a USHL champion and he also took part in the All-Star Game of the USHL.

Zemgus Girgensons Professional Career

He was selected by the Buffalo Sabres as the 14th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. With this selection, Girgensons became the highest drafted Latvian in the history of the NHL, 16 spots higher than Sandis Ozoliš in 1991. 

On 13 July 2012, he signed a professional contract with the Sabres that forfeited his eligibility for the NCAA. On October 2, 2013, he scored his first NHL career goal in the season opener against Detroit Red Wings' Jimmy Howard.

Girgensons, as a restricted free agent re-signed with the Sabres on 1 September 2016, agreed to a one- year contract extension. The following season, Girgensons re-signed again with the Sabres on August 17, 2017, agreeing to a $3.2 million two-year contract.
