Yoenis Cespedes is a Cuban professional baseball player who was born on October 18, 1985, in Campechuela, Granma Province, Cuba. He is a professional outfielder who has played for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball. He has previously played for the Oakland athletics, Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers in MLB. He is the son of Cresenci Cespedes (his father) and Estela Milanes (his mother).
He debuted in the Cuban national series with Granma during the 2003-04 Cuban national series and was considered as the rookie of the year award for the Cuban national series. He started the 2009 Baseball World Cup as Cuba's center fielder. He struggled much in that game but only hit .194/.2775/.333 while being caught in his only steal attempt. He went 11 for 22 with 12 runs, 14 RBI, two doubles and four homers in six games at the 2010 World University Baseball Championship. After being defected from Cuba during the summer of 2011, he established residency in the U.S. in January 2012. He was then traded to the Detroit tigers along with Alex Wilson and Gabe Speier for rick Porcello. There he played his first game against the Minnesota twins on April 6, 2015, leading them to the victory of 4-0. He had won the American league Rawlings Gold Glove Award in left field and had 9 assists, 11 defensive runs saved and a 15 ultimate zone rating.
He resigned on a three-year, $75 million contract with the Mets on January 26, 2016, and was named to the National League roster for the 2016 Major League baseball all-star game which was held at Petco Park.
