The only reason I played football on the school team was because they kept everybody, but I didn’t play. I was naïve and it never dawned on me that I should go in a different direction.”

His mother Carol Matich, who worked three different jobs to support family, often used to be worried about him.

“I felt badly because a boy needs a dad. I thought, ‘How am I going to raise him without a dad?’ I really prayed about that. I look back now and marvel at what he’s accomplished.”

Trevor Matich started his football career in 1985. In the 1985 NFL Draft, he was selected by the New England Patriots. In his first game, he injured his ankle and missed the rest of the season. He played four seasons for the Patriots and later played for the Detroit Lions, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins.

Matich played a total of 12 seasons in NFL, mainly as a long snapper. While playing for the Indianapolis Colts, he used to practice constantly and do warm-ups on the sidelines. Therefore, he was called the "Hardest Working Man in Pro Football".
