Club Career

Ajax

Thomas Vermaelen began his professional football career i 2003 after being promoted from the youth system of Ajax. He made his professional club debut on February 15, 2004, against FC Volendam. He was further sent on a loan to RKC Waalwijk in 2004.

He won the KNVB Cup on his return to the partnered with his international mate, Jan Vertonghen in the defensive line. After the departure of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, he was named as captain of Ajax for the remainder of the 2008–09 season. His five seasons with the club ended up with a total of 97 appearances and seven goals.

Arsenal

Vermaelen joined the Premier League side Arsenal on June 19, 2009, signing a four-year contract with the club. He made his Premier League debut on August 15, 2009, scoring a goal against Everton. He further scored a brace against Wigan Athletic in a 4–0 victory. He was voted Player of the Month twice in a row. He captained Arsenal in an Emirates Cup match against Milan in the 2010–11 season. He was in the club for five seasons appearing in 110 games and scoring 13 goals. He is a good friend of former teammates Van Persie and Koscielny.

Barcelona

Vermaelen further joined Barcelona on August 9, 2014, signing a five-year contract with the club. He started his debut for Barcelona on May 23, 2015, in a match against Deportivo de La Coruña. His first goal for the club came on August 29, 2015, against Malaga. He was then loaned to Roma on August 8, 2016, for a season. He played for Barcelona and started as a central defender replacing injured Samuel Umtiti.
