Terry completed his schooling from Woodlawn High School where he played for his high school team. After that, he attended Louisiana Tech University and played for the University team.

Terry started his professional playing career with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being drafted in the 1970 NFL draft. He played football for the Steelers until his retirement in 1984 from the playing career.
