He was the starting quarterback and defensive back for the Marist football team. During his high school career, he had a total of 2,600 yards rushing, 40 rushing touchdowns, 2,500 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was named the Georgia 4A Offensive Player of the Year in 2004.

Sean McVay became an assistant wide receivers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008 under head coach Jon Gruden. He became the quality control/wide receivers coach for the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League the following year of 2009.
McVay came under head coach Mike Shanahan in 2010 when he became the assistant tight ends coach for the Washington Redskins. He was promoted to tight ends coach in 2011 and held the position till the 2013 season. He became the offensive coordinator of Redskins coach when Jay Gruden took over the position of head coach in January 2014.
