Russell Westbrook Early Life and Family

Russell Westbrook III was born on November 12, 1988, in Long Beach, California. He is the older son of Russell Westbrook Jr. and Shannon Horton. his younger brother is named Raynard. He was a student of Leuzinger High School where he played for the high school basketball team. 

Westbrook joined UCLA as he was offered a scholarship by the head coach Ben Howland. Westbrook played two seasons of college basketball with the team. He forewent the following two season to enter the 2008 NBA draft.

Professional Life of Russell Westbrook

The Seattle SuperSonics which later relocated to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder drafted Russell Westbrook in the 2008 NBA draft as 4th overall. On July 5, 2008, Westbrook signed with the Thunders. In his rookie season, he was able to record a triple-double and ended the season with an average of 15.3 points, 5.3 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 steals. He finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year which was won by Derrick Rose.

Russell Westbrook became a full-time starter in his second season at NBA and ended the season with an average of 16.1 points, 8.0 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 steals. In the 2010 season, he was selected as the Western Conference reserve for the 2011 NBA All-Star Game where he made his first all-star appearance. At the end of the season, Westbrook had an average of 21.9 points, 8.2 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.9 steals.

In the 2011-2012 season, the Thunder went on to reach the NBA Finals where the lost to Miami Heats in 5 games. On his first NBA Finals debut, Westbrook was able to record 27 points and 11 assists in game 1 of the 105-94 victory. He joined the list of only players with 25+ points and 10+ assists in their NBA Finals debut alongside Michael Jordan. He ended the season with an average of 23.6 points, 5.5 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 steals.

For the 2012-2013 season, Russell Westbrook helped lead the Oklahoma City Thunders to the playoff as and become the no.1 seed in the Western Conference. He had an average of 23.2 points, 7.4 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game during the season. In the second game of the playoff series, Westbrook injured his right knee and was declared out of the rest of the playoffs.

Westbrook had a troublesome season for the 2013-2014 season where he had to sit out of play on various occasions due to his injury. However, Kevin Durant stepped up to the court during his absence and the Thunders were able to stay competitive even in his absence. In the postseason of 2014, Westbrook recorded an average of 26.7 points, 8.1 assists, and 7.3 rebounds.

The season of 2015 became an outstanding season for Westbrook where he was able to show good performance at. He was able to record three straight triple-doubles becoming the first player to do so since LeBron James in 2009. Despite, Westbrook's outstanding performance, the Thunders were unable to reach the playoffs as the team finished ninth in the West with a record of 45-37.

During the 2016 offseason, Kevin Durant signed with the Golden States Warriors. As one of the star players of the Thunders left the team, the Team became more determined to keep Russell Westbrook and signed him with the three-year contract extension of $85.7 million on August 4, 2016. Westbrook proved that he was worth the trouble as he was awarded the NBA Most Valuable Player Award at the first-ever NBA Awards Show that season.

Russell Westbrook signed a five-year, $205 million contract extension with the Thunder on September 29, 2017. Westbrook ended the 2017 season with an average of 25.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, 10.2 assists, and 1.8 steals.

Westbrook joined Houston Rockets in 2019 and played for a season. He then moved to Washington Wizards where he currently plays.
