Rafael Garcia was a legendary boxing cutman who worked alongside a dozen world championship boxers including Alexis Arguello, Robert Duran, and most recently with undefeated welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather.

 

Garcia died on 13th November 2017, at aged 88, due to complications from leukemia. 

Rafael Garcia Early Life and Career

Rafael Garcia was born in Puebla, Mexico, in 1929. He started boxing at 15 before becoming a cornerman, a job he held for over six decades, working with 35 world championship.

Garcia, a pin-adorned cap man, spent recent decades living in Las Vegas, where he worked with numerous fighters but became best known as the cutman and hand-wrapper for Floyd Mayweather. He worked with Mayweather through most of Mayweather's career.

Also, Mayweather, whose brittle hands were always an issue, raved about Garcia’s ability to wrap them in a such a way that he was able to keep them protected as best as possible during his fights.

Besides Mayweather, Garcia worked with legends such as Wilfredo Gomez, Roberto Duran, and Alexis Arguello.

 In 2015, El Paso doctor Rafael Armendariz opened a wrestling and boxing museum in honor of several sports legends, including Garcia. Furthermore, Garcia was inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in August 2017 in the non-boxer category.

Rafael Garcia Personal Life (Health, Death, and Funeral)

Not much known about Garcia’s love life. Was he married or do he had a child remains big question today. However, he was godfather to former welterweight and junior welterweight world titleholder, Jessie Vargas.

According to his godson, his health began to decline after he was stung more than 100 times by a swarm of Africanized bees. Later Garcia had a heart attack and was diagnosed with leukemia. On 13th November 2017, Rafael Garcia died at the age of 88. His death was confirmed by Mayweather Promotions on Twitter at 10:45 a.m.

On 24th November, members of the Las Vegas boxing community gathered at the Davis Funeral Home in Las Vegas to celebrate the life of the famed cut man and trainer and overall good guy Rafael. Also, Garcia’s family and close friends, including a large delegation from the Mayweather Gym, gathered at the funeral home prior to the eulogies started.
