Paulo Manuel Carvalho de Sousa was born on August 30, 1970, to Maria Madalena Sousa and Delfim Silva Sousa. He was born in Viseu, Portugal.

Regarding his nationality, he holds a Portuguese citizenship and was born to Portuguese parents. There is no any detail info about his parents, and it seems he is a single child of his parents.

Sousa was interested in football from an early age and started playing professionally for S.L Benfica. He won Primeira Liga Championship in 1991 and two years later he won the domestic cup.

Paulo Sousa Football Career

Paulo Sousa started his career in football from an early age.  After winning Primeira Liga Champions and domestic cup, he signed for Lisbon neighbors Sporting Clube de Portugal along with Antonio Pacheco. After a single season, he joined Juventus FC.  On 16 January 1991, his international debut came in a friendly match against Spain.

Sousa played two seasons for Turin and led it to the conquest of the UEFA Champions League in 1995-96. He also won the Series A of the previous year. In the same year, he also won the domestic cup, Supercup as well as he finished in UEFA Cup as a runner-up.

Then, Sousa moved to Germany to play for Borussia Dortmund. The following season, he repeated the Champions League triumph. The final game was against Juventus, his former club. He appeared in that game. However, he was plagued with injuries.

Subsequently, he returned to play for Inter Milan. Sousa briefly represented Parma A.C, Panathinaikos F.C, and RCD Espanyol.  Sousa has played for his country at UEFA Euro 1996 and 2000.  He was a squad member at FIFA World Cup 2002. Eventually, in 2002, he retired at the age of 31.

Besides his football skills, he is well known for his leadership skills. Paulo Sousa started his career in coaching by joining the coaching staff of Portugal national team. He was appointed as assistant to his former boss, Carlos Queiroz in the summer of 2008. Later in the same year, he was appointed as the head coach of Championship team Queens Park Rangers.

Apart from this, he has managed Swansea City and Leicester City. He also worked as manager of Hungarian champions Videoton FC.  Maccabi Tel Aviv F.C. was the Israeli Premier League when Sousa was its head coach.
