Mahomes signed a fully guaranteed four-year $16.42 million contract with a $10.08 million signing bonus with the Chiefs on July 20, 2017.
Mahomes made his first career start in the Week 17 game of 2017 against the Denver Broncos. The starter Alex Smith sat out on rest to give Mahomes an opportunity at the game. In the game, he completed 22 of 35 passes for 284 yards with an interception to help the Chiefs win the game with a score of 27-24.

The Chiefs traded Alex Smith in 2018 which resulted in Mahomes taking the spotlight as the starting quarterback for the 2018 season. On his first game of the season as the full-time starting quarterback playing against the Los Angeles Chargers, he threw for 256 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions earning himself the AFC offensive player of the Week honor. He became the first player since Tom Brady in 2011 to become the back-to-back player of the week. For his outstanding performance, he was named AFC offensive player of the Month for September.
