Niklas Hjalmarsson Playing Career

Chicago Blackhawks

In the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Niklas Hjalmarsson was selected 108th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. He represented HV71 in the Elitserien for three years professionally.

His NHL debut came in the 2007-08 season with the Blackhawks in North America. Following his majority of the season with the Rockford IceHogs, he landed on the regular roster after defenseman James Wisniewski traded to the Anaheim Ducks.

He scored his career first NHL goal against Chris Osgood of the Detroit Red Wings.

In 2009-10 season, Hjalmarsson made 77 game appearances and all 22 in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the Blackhawks, averaging over 19 minutes played per game.

In the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs, a slapshot Hjalmarsson took was redirected by teammate Andrew Ladd, leading the Blackhawks a 3-2 win in the 6th game of the Stanley Cup Finals: the team won the game in 4-3 and eventually the 2010 Stanley Cup.

On 9th July 2010, Hjalmarsson signed an offer sheet with the San Jose Sharks, agreeing on a four-year contract deal worth $14 million. Later three days, Blackhawks matched the offer sheet, making Hjalmarsson the first ever NHL defenseman in thirteen years to receive an offer sheet as a restricted free agent.

Analytically, Blackhawks’ matching of the offer meant that they no longer had enough cap space to re-sign goaltender Antti Niemi, who unintentionally concluded signing the Sharks later that off-season.

In the 2012-13 NHL lockout, Hjalmarsson represented HC Bolzano in the Italian Serie A and the IIHF Continental Cup.

The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in the year 2013. In the 2013 off-season, he signed an extension contract with the Blackhawks, agreeing to a 4-year deal at an annual average salary of $4.1 million.

In 2015, Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup for the third time, making Hjalmarsson one of only seven players to be part of 2010, 2013, and 2015 Stanley Cup Victories.

Arizona Coyotes

On 23rd of June 2017, Hjalmarsson was traded to Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Laurent Dauphin and Connor Murphy. On 25th July 2021, Hjalmarsson retired from professional hockey following 14 seasons in the NHL.
