Michael Zimmer is an American football coach who is the current head coach of the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL. Besides, he has served as a coaching staff of various colleges and NFL teams. Prior to him accepting the position of head coach, he was a defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons, and Dallas Cowboys.

Early Life of Mike Zimmer

Michael Zimmer was born on June 5, 1956, in Peoria, Illinois to parents Bill Zimmer and Ann Zimmer. His father was a former NFL player and coach. Zimmer attended the Lockport Township High School. He earned all-conference honors in football during his high school years.

After completing high school, he joined the Illinois State University majoring in physical education. He played college football during his university years and was the backup to quarterback Bob Lopez.

Professional Life of Mike Zimmer

Mike Zimmer started his career as a coach after graduating from Illinois. His first job as a coach was as a part-time defensive assistant at the University of Missouri where he stayed from 1979-1980. He then moved to Weber State College from 1981-1988. He served as Weber's inside linebackers coach from 1981-1984, defensive backs coach from 1985-1988 and was the defensive coordination from 1983-1993.

After his time at Weber State College, he went to join the Washington State Cougars as their defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 1989-1993. He joined the big leagues of NFL in 1994 as an assistant coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Zimmer was promoted to defensive backs coach of the Cowboys in 1995 and was later promoted to defensive coordinator in 2000. During his time at the Cowboys, he served under various coaches such as Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey, Dave Campo, and Bill Parcells.

Mike Zimmer joined the Atlanta Falcons early in 2007 as the new defensive coordinator under the newly hired head coach, Bobby Petrino. He stayed with the Falcons for only one season. He was named as the defensive coordinator of Cincinnati Bengals on January 15, 2008. His defensive plays helped the Bengals to be ranked 4th in the league. The Bengals ended the 2008 season with 7th ranked defense in total yards and 9th ranked defense in points allowed.

Zimmer was interviewed by the Cleveland Browns for the vacancy of their head coach following the Bengals performance of the 6th ranked defense in total yards and 8th ranked defense in points allowed finish in the 2012 season. However, the Browns went on to hire Rob Chudzinski on January 11, 2013.

On September 7, 2014, Mike Zimmer became the head coach of Minnesota Vikings. On Zimmer's first season, the team had a record of 7 wins and 9 losses which was an improvement from the 5-10-1 record of the previous year. Zimmer further improved the record in the 2015 season with the team ending the season with a record of 11-5 as well as winning the NFC North.

Zimmer signed a contract extension with the Vikings on July 28, 2016. He missed a few games in the season due to an eye injury. He finished the 2016 NFL season with a record of 8-8. The 2017 season became one of the greatest seasons in franchise history with the Vikings finishing with a 13-3 record.
