Meyers Leonard was born on February 27, 1992, in Woodbridge Virginia. He was born to James and Tracie Leonard. He holds an American nationality and belongs to white ethnicity.  However, his early life was awful, when he was six, his father was killed in a bike accident, and his family was largely victimized. He has an older brother named, Bailey Leonard. Professionally, he is a U.S marine who worked in Afghanistan.

He attended Robinson High School; the school was located in Robinson Illinois. While studying there, he also participated and performed for a high school team, initially, he plays as a guard but later he was appointed to play center in his freshman and sophomore years. He also led his school to the IHSA Class 2A state championship, before starting his collegiate basketball career at the University of Illinois.

From 2010 to 2012, Leonard played for the University of Illinois. On December 5, 2011, he was named Big 10 Co-Player of the Week after averaging 16.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game with two Illinois victories. Similarly, in the Year 2011, on December 26, he was named Big 10 Player of the Week.

However, his professional career began with the Portland Trail Blazers when he was drafted with the 11th overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft.
