Zagunis started her career from the Women's Sabre event for the first time at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Entering the tournament in the Rund of 16, she defeated Japanese fencer Madoka Hisagae scoring 15-13. In the semifinal, she gripped at least a silver medal.
