Miller was born on April 29, 1947, in San Francisco, California. He was raised in the same city. In 1963, Miller was invited to join the Olympic Club as a Junior Golf Section Member. At the age of 16, Miller won the San Francisco city junior title. A year later he also won the U.S. Junior Amateur title.

Miller graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1965. After graduation, he was enrolled at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Miller joined the PGA Tour in 1969 when he was just 22 years old. He won his first tour event in 1971. Initially, Miller accomplished top 10 finishes in 1971 and 1972. Finally, a major trophy for Miller came in 1973 when he won the U.S. Open by beating Schlee by a single stroke.

Because of his brilliant performances, he was named PGA Player of the Year in 1974. In 1975, Miller won the Phoenix Open by 14 strokes. Miller was also the winner of Tucson Open and the 1976 Open Championship. Miller suffered a dip in form after his Open Championship win in 1976. The period from 1977 to 1979 was kind of a dark period for Miller. He marked his first win in 4 years in the year 1980. Miller relished a brilliant season in 1981.

He was the winner of the Million Dollar Challenge in Sun City. That victory made Miller leading worldwide money-winner of 1981. Miller also got a chance to compete in Ryder's cup in that year. Miller retired from professional golf in 1981. In his 16 years long professional career, Miller grabbed 25 PGA Tour wins and 105 top 10 finishes. However, Miller never had a top 3 finish in the PGA Championship in his entire career.

Miller was eligible for the Senior PGA Tour in 1997, however, the golfer decided not to take part in the tour. Miller also worked as a commentator after finishing his career. Throughout his career, Miller has won U.S. Open (1973), The Open Championship (1976), PGA Player of the Year (1974) and PGA Tour leading money winner (1974). Miller was named in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998.
