James Joseph Harbaugh is the head football coach born on December 23, 1963, in Toledo, Ohio. He is a former American football player who became head coach at Stanford University, the NFL's San Francisco 49ers and the University of Michigan. He is the son of Jacqueline M. "Jackie" and Jack Harbaugh. His father is Irish and German and his mother is half silicon and half-polish. He has an elder brother whose name is John Harbaugh and a younger sister Joani Harbaugh. Both the brothers became athletes while their sister learned the splice game film for her father by the time she was 10.

Harbaugh started his very first career to play football for Bo Schembechler's Michigan wolverines' football team in February 1982. He came to Michigan with a high school reputation as a slick California passer. As a true freshman, he and junior Dave hall were backups to Steve smith in 1982. Steve had broken Michigan's single season record with 2335 yards of total offense in 1981. Steve started all 12 games and Dave handled the limited backup role. In 1990 and '91 he played his first few NFL seasons but appeared as the starting quarterback and led the bears to identical 11-5 regular season records and playoff appearances. He was acquired by the Indian polis colt in 1994 and enjoyed a dream season in 1995. He led the NFL in passer rating and carried the colts to the edge of the super bowl before his Hail Mary pass was knocked down in the final seconds of the AFC conference. After that, he earned his only pro bowl selection and was named co-NFL of the year. The year before colts drafted Peyton manning, he remained the colt's primary quarterback through 1997. He then spent one year in Baltimore and two more in San Diego. He departed his career as an NFL player after the 2000 season with 262888 career passing yards, 129 touchdowns, and a 58.8 percent completion percentage.

In 2002, he joined the Oakland raiders as the quarterback's coach. He then left the Oakland raiders to take over the university of San Diego football program after two years. During his three years at the helm, he as the running backs and assistant head coach with his father on the board, the toreros posted combined records of 29-6 and won two division I-AA championships. This success led him to a high profile opportunity with Stanford University in the powerful Pac-10 conference. He brought a winning record in his third season succeeding a team that finished 1-11 the year before his arrival. He then guided to a 12-1 record and the No. 4 ranking in the final AP poll in 2010. In January 2011, he was capped with his selection as the head coach of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers through his coaching ranks.
