Jim Boeheim's coaching career started with Syracuse in 1969 and later was promoted as a head coach for the same team in 1976. In 39 years as a head coach to Syracuse, he guided to nine Big East regular-season championships, Big East Tournament championships, and 28 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Apart from his coaching career with Syracuse, he worked as an assistant coach for the United States men’s national basketball team at the 1990 FIBA World Championship, the 2006 FIBA World Championship, the 2008 Summer Olympics, the 2012 Summer Olympics, and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Previously, Jim Boeheim stated he took retirement in April 2018. However, in March 2017, his contract was extended beyond the 2017-18 season.
