Jay Scot Bilas was born on December 24, 1963, in San Pedro, California, United States. He attended the Rolling Hills High School where he played basketball for his high school team. He was a consensus Top 50 recruit and was also named in First Team All-CIF, First Team All-South Bay, MVP of the Bay League and Best in the West during his high school years.
Bilas went to Duke University where he continued with basketball. He helped the Duke's to Final Four and National Championship game in 1986. During his college years, he scored 1,062 points and grabbed 692 rebounds with a 55% shooting from the field. Bilas graduated from Duke in 1986.
After graduating from university, Jay Bilas was picked in the fifth round of the 1986 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. His professional play as a basketball player only lasted for three seasons from 1986–1989. During his active years as a player, he played overseas in Italy's 2nd Division and in Spain's 1st Division.
Bilas became the assistant coach for his for Duke University in 1990 under the head coach Mike Krzyzewski. He served as the assistant coach for three seasons until 1992. During his time as an assistant coach, Duke was able to advance to three Final Fours and won two National Championships.
Jay Bilas has also become an instructor for Nike Skills Academy in Beaverton, Oregon, the Nike/Amar'e Stoudemire Skills Academy in Phoenix, Arizona, and the Nike/LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, Ohio. Bilas was one of the 12 coaches to take part in Operation Hardwood I and II that coached United States Service teams in 2005 and 2006.
In 1995, Bilas joined ESPN as a college basketball analyst on games and since then has been a color commentator and studio analyst for ESPN. Since 2000, he has served as co-host of ESPN's studio broadcasts. He has also made many appearances on SportsCenter, ESPNEWS and ESPN Radio. Bilas Joined CBS as a game analyst from 2003 to 2010 covering the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. He has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Performance by Studio Analyst in 2007 and 2008.
Jay Bilas currently continues to work as an analyst for ESPN all the while maintaining the position of litigation practitioner in the Charlotte Office of Moore & Van Allen.
