She is best known for her 13-year tenure on NBC's Today program, followed by 12 years of co-hosting an NBC show Dateline. At present, she is the anchor for CBS Sunday Morning. Pauley described herself as such a shy little kid. However, since her childhood days, she actively participated in debating and public speaking tournaments. Pauley won first place in the Girls’ Extemporaneous Speaking division of the National Forensic League in Indiana.

In 1968, Pauley graduated her high school from Warren Central High School in Indianapolis. Later, she joined Indiana University majoring in political science. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority house.

In 1972, Jane auditioned for a reporter job at WISH-TV in Indianapolis.  Back then WISH-TV was an affiliate to CBS. After working there for 3 years, she joined NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV. Pauley co-anchored with Floyd Kalber. It was the beginning of her career with NBC.
