At the beginning of the 2013-14 season, Maclaren signed his first professional contract with Pert Glory, agreeing on a three-year deal. He made his first-team debut in a 3-1 defeat against Adelaide United. His first professional goal came on 27th October 2013, in a 1-0 victory against Melbourne City and recorded his second goal the following month.
On 5th July 2015, Maclaren joined Brisbane Roar, signing a two-year contract on a free transfer. On 8th October 2015, he made his Roar debut against the Western Sydney Wanderers, where he also scored a goal.
Throughout his two-season career at Roar, Maclaren compiled 40 goals in 53 matches.
In May 2017, Maclaren arrived at German 2. Bundesliga side Darmstadt 98, signing a three-year contract. On 4th August of the same year, he made his debut in the second round of the season in a 1-1 draw with FC Kaiserslautern.
In January 2018, he was loaned out to Scottish club Hibernian. On 24th January, he made his Scottish Premiership debut in a 1-0 victory at Dundee. On 14th May 2018, he returned to his parent's club, after playing 15 games with eight goals.
Maclaren is eligible for both Scotland and Australia to play football internationally as he was born in Australia to Scottish father. His international journey began when he received a call-up to Scotland U-19 national squad. He represented U-19 team in two matches playing against Denmark and Norway.
Then he was involved with the Australia U-20 squad. Also, he was a team member of Australia U-20 team that played in 2016 AFC U-23 Championship. In May 2016, Maclaren earned his first call-up to Australia senior national team for a friendly match against England, in which he started.
In May 2018, Maclaren was included in Australia’s 32-man provisional team for the FIFA World Cup. However, he could not make up to 26-man squad to go to a pre-tournament camp in Turkey. Later, his name was counted into the training squad following an injury to Tomi Juric. After playing in a preparatory friendly match against the Czech Republic, he was selected in Australia’s 23-man squad along with his teammates Mathew Ryan, Tom Rogic, and Mile Jedinak.
