Irish UFC fighter Joseph Duffy has ended his career and retired from mixed martial arts as he announced on Sunday. He called it a quit after he faced a submission loss to Spanish Joel Alvarez at UFC Fight Island 2. Joe is known for his submission win over UFC former champ Conor McGregor.

Duffy fought in the UFC on eight occasions and his Saturday night's loss was 4th in the promotion since joining in 2015 and was his 3rd consecutive loss as he was defeated consecutively by James Vick and Marc Diakiese in 2017 and 2019 respectively. His other loss was against Dustin Poirier in 2016.

The Irish fighter announced that he has retired through the Instagram post where he wrote:

Thank you all so much for all your messages of support all week. I have been blessed on this journey in MMA and am truly grateful for every experience. I felt great all through the camp and even warming up, I believed I was back to my former self than when I went in there it just falls to pieces. I think it’s time to realize that I haven’t got what it takes any more. Congrats to Joel Alvarez and thank you to the UFC for all the opportunities. I’m sorry I didn’t achieve what I set out to achieve for my fans, family, friends, and myself but it just wasn’t meant to be. I am officially retiring from MMA competition.

Duffy is popular for defeating his Countryman Conor McGregor who later went on to become UFC's first double champ holding two titles at the same time. The two fought under the Cage Warriors banner where Joe submitted the Notorious in just 38 seconds of the bout.
