 The Albion Park High School attendant Wilkshire initially playing for the Middlesbrough Youth Team and signed his first professional contract with the Middlesbrough in the 2001-2002 season to keep him there till 2004. However, playing for the team till 2003, he moved to Bristol City for a transfer fee of $306,000.

While playing 3 seasons with Bristol City, Luke also made his appearance in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Soon his solid performance in the World Cup granted him a 3-year deal from the Dutch top flight club FC Twente. After leaving his contract extension till 2012 with the FC Twente, Luke signed with Russian side Dynamo Moscow on August 26, 2008, for a reported transfer fee of $2.69 million, $60,000 less than that of his market value at that time which was $2.75 million.

And in 2009, he signed a 3-year contract to keep him with the Moscow till 2012, which was later followed by his another contract extension in 2011 to keep him up till 2014.

Even, though, the detail of the contract detail of Luke Wilkshire with the Moscow is not disclosed, Wilkshire's new contract earned him the annual salary of $5 million placing him 6th among Australian Sport's Highest Earners for 2012.

Behind him, the Australian players like the former New York Red Bulls' Tim Cahill, fellow national team goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer (ranked 13) and former Aston Villa's Brett Holman (ranked 14) earned $4.5 million, $3.5 million and $3.4 million respectively.
