Herm Edwards Jr. was born on April 27, 1954, in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey to Herman Edwards Sr. and Martha Edwards. He is an American by birth and belongs to the White ethnic group. Herm Edwards played nine seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL from 1977 to 1985 and also made an appearance in Super Bowl XV until he was cut by head coach Buddy Ryan in 1986. After that, he played for a short period of time for the Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons in 1986, and in the same year, he announced his retirement.
After his retirement as a player, Edward then became a defensive assistant at San Jose State Spartans Football from 1987 to 1989. After that, he was NFL defensive backs coach with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1990 to 1995. From 1996 to 2000 he became a defensive back and head coach for Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Tony Dungy.
He had not in the past held a coaching or coordinator position but still, he was hired as head coach of the New York Jets on January 28, 2001. While he was a head coach at New York Jets the Jets were able to get mild success in their first two seasons. His tenure with the Jets ended when he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a player.
