Greg Vanney is an American former professional soccer player who is the current head coach of the Toronto FC in the MLS. During his time as a soccer player, he played 10 seasons in the league and three-and-a-half in the French First Division. He was also in the U.S. national team from 1996 to 2006.

 

Vanney became the manager of Toronto FC in 2014 and has won the domestic treble, winning the MLS Cup, Supporter's Shield and the Canadian Championship.

Greg Vanney's Early Life

Greg Vanney was born on June 11, 1974, in South Boston, Virginia. He is the son of William F. Vanney and Jeanette Vanney. He attended the Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe, Arizona where he played for the soccer team. He led his team to three consecutive state championships from 1990-1992. WIth 13 assists in a 1990-1991 season and 33 goals in the 1991-1992 season, Vanney holds the school record for the most assist and scores in a season.

After finishing high school, he joined the Florida International University and later moved to UCLA. He was named All-America honorable mention in his senior season.

Greg Vanney's Professional Life

Greg Vanney was Drafted in the 1996 MLS College Draft where he was picked 17th overall by the Los Angeles Galaxy. He stayed with the Galaxy from 1996 to 2001. He was one of the leagues' best defenders and helped the Galaxy to three MLSCupp Finals and CONCACAF Champion's Cup Championships during his time with the team. He was named MLS Best XI in 2000 and 2001 and was an MLS All-Star for the year 2001.

Vanney was transferred to the French Firs Division Club SC Bastia in 2002. He helped the club to the Coupe de France Finals which was the club's first appearance in over 20 years. He stayed with the club till the end of 2004 season and returned to MLS in 2005 signing with FC Dallas.

On January 12, 2007, he was traded to Colorado Rapids. Playing for only six months with the team, he was traded to D.C. United. Rights to Greg Vanney was later transferred to his first club, LA Galaxy on February 15, 2008. He retired from the professional play in October of 2008.

Vanney shifted to coaching after the end of his professional play. He became the Academy Director for Real Salt Lake from 2008 to 2011. After the dismissal of Ryan Nelsen from Toronto FC on August 31, 2014, he took over his position as the head coach.

It was his first job as a head coach and he was able to get one in the Major League Soccer. During his first season with the team, Real Salt Lake ended the season in seventh place with two wins, six losses, and two ties record.
