College Career

Upon graduation from high school, Gerrit Cole attended the University of California, Los Angeles. In his first year for UCLA Bruins, Coach John Savage made him the team’s Friday night starting pitcher. He recorded a 4-8 win-loss record and a 3.49 earned run average in the very season while also recording 104 strikeouts in 85 innings.

Adding up to his college career, Cole was a part of the 2009 United States collegiate national baseball team and contributed to making the UCLA  Bruins the best baseball team in school history and the 2nd best team in the nation, along with Trevor Bauer.

Professional Career

In the 2011 MLB draft, Pittsburgh Pirates picked Cole first overall. On August 15, 2011, he signed a minor league contract with an estimated fee of $8 million signing bonus, the highest signing bonus ever offered to a rookie. Though he signed too late to pitch in that year in the minor league season, Cole pitched for the Arizona Fall league side Mesa Solar Sox.

In 2012, he was called up as a non-roster invitee to spring training for the Pirates with an option to play in the Minor Leagues.

On June 11, 2013, he made his MLB debut after being promoted to the major leagues following James McDonald and Wandy Rodriguez's injuries.
