Initially signed by the Seattle Mariners on November 28, 1992, to play in the minor league, David Ortiz made his professional career debut with the Minnesota Twins on September 2, 1997, and played there for till 2002 earning the salary of $950,000 annually.

Having moved to the Boston Red Sox, he signed a 1-year contract worth $1.25 million on January 22, 2003.

Though Ortiz had signed another 1-year contract valued at $4.5 million on January 31, 2004, with Boston, later on, May 21, that year, he was offered a 2-year contract extension of $12.5 million.

After his contract was nearly over, the Boston signed him with a 4-year contract worth $52 million on April 10, 2006. Then in the 2011 season, Ortiz earned $12.5 million as per the exercise bonus already signed on November 4, 2010.

Following his 1-year contract value of $14.575 signed on February 12, 2012, Ortiz signed a 2 year $29 million contract with Boston on November 2, that year.

And on March 23, 2014, he signed a year contract extension worth $16 million for the next season. However, $87,431  from his 2015 season salary was forfeited and was suspended for 1 game after he made a physical contact with an umpire on May 8, 2015.

Though he was to exercise $16 million option bonus for the 2017 season on November 3, 2016, following 13 days, David announced his retirement.
