Playing Career (1987-2005) And Retirement

In 1987, Fernando made his senior career debut with Valladolid where he later played for 2 seasons and scored 3 goals in 58 appearances. Then the team was later bought by Real Madrid in 1989 and so he was.

In his first season with Real Madrid, Fernando scored 7 goals in 37 games, and playing till 2003, he recorded 102 goals in 439 appearances. Hierro also led the team to win 5 La Liga titles and 3 UEFA Champions League trophies.

Real Madrid's captain then captain, Fernando Hierro scored a hat trick for Madrid on March 24, 2002, against Real Zaragoza.

After playing for Qatar's Al Rayyan Sports Club for a season till 2004, he returned to Europe to sign with Premier League side Bolton Wanderers and played for a season only. Then on May 10, 2005, he announced his retirement.

Hierro was appointed as Malaga CF's director of football in July 2011. After the club finished 4th and qualified for the Champions League for the first time ever, on May 28, 2012, Fernando Hierro waved hands to the club.

He also replaced Zinedine Zidane as the new assistant coach for Real Madrid on July 10, 2014. In 2016, Hierro was appointed as the manager for the first time at Segunda Division side Real Oviedo, and on June 14, 2017, he left the club with mutual consent.

Hierro, also the Royal Spanish Football Federation sporting director worked for 4 years after his appointment in late September 2007, later he re-joined on November 27, 2017.

Just only 2 days before, the 2018 FIFA World Cup began, on June 13, 2018, Fernando Hierro was named as the new coach for Spain's National Team after sacking Julen Lopetegui. Lopetegui was sacked after Real Madrid revealed that he was joining the club after the World Cup.

Early Life and Early Career

Fernando was born as Fernando Ruiz Hierro, to Remedios Hierro Ruiz and Antonio Ruiz Jimenez on March 23, 1968,  in Velez-Malaga, Spain. Fernando has 2 brothers: Manolo Hierro and Antonio Hierro, both are former footballers.

Hierro commenced his football career at his hometown club Velez-Malaga in 1980 at the age of 12 and later made his brief career with the CD Malaga youth team. But after it didn't work out for him, he made his return to Velez-Malaga in 1985 and played for 2 seasons before making his senior career debut with Valladolid.
