Prior to being drafted, he had played college football at Washington State. Originally having the trades of safety strong, he has transitioned to the position of a hybrid safety-inside linebacker for the Cardinals.
Deone Ariel Bucannon was born on August 30, 1992, in Oakland, California to parents Sonji Bucannon and Duane Bucannon. Bucannon is a graduate of Vanden High School where as a senior he recorded 107 tackles, including four sacks, and had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He earned SCAC Defensive Player of the Year honor for two consecutive years in addition to all-league and all city honors.
For College, Bucannon attended the Washington State where he continued with football clubs. In his senior year of 2013, he was a first team All-Pac-12 and first-team All-American selection. His collegiate football record was 384 tackles and 15 interceptions.

Bucannon debuted with the team on September 8, 2014, in the season-opening match against the San Diego Chargers finishing his first professional game with five tackles. At the end of the season, Bucannon had recorded 83 total tackles, 66 solo tackles, two sacks, two pass deflections, and a forced fumble in nine starts and 16 games. However, in the 2015 season, Sean Weatherspoon was injured during training camp and Bucannon was switched to the linebacker position to fill his void.
