In Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, Hunter attended Friends ' Central School. He averaged 21.6 points as a junior, 11.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game while being named the Year's Pennsylvania Class AA Player.

Hunter averaged 23.5 points as a senior in 2016, 9.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 blocks per game. Hunter was classified as a four-star recruit and ranked in the 2016 high school class as the 72nd overall recruit and 14th best small forward.

Hunter committed to Virginia on September 12, 2015, choosing UVA over other NC State & Notre Dame offers. Hunter scored double figures in 16 games during his redshirt freshman season, including 11 conference games. During the 2018 ACC tournament, Hunter broke his wrist and was unable to play in the 2018 NCAA tournament. Without Hunter, Virginia's number 1 seed went on to lose the number 16 seed, UMBC, in the first round.
