Charles Clay was born on February 13, 1989, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He is the son of Charles Clay Sr. and Jerrilyn Clay. He was a student at Little Rock Central High School and was a member of his high school football team. During his senior years in high school, he rushed for 891 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Clay enrolled in the University of Tulsa after completing high school. As a freshman, he appeared in all 14 games of the season. He was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team as well as All-C-USA honorable mention in his freshman years. He was the starter for the following season of 2014 and played for 14 games but missed two games in week 11 and 12 due to an injury. Charles Clay signed a five-year, $38 million contract with the Buffalo Bills on March 19, 2015. He was quickly announced as the starter for the Bills and started in 13 games of the Bills' 2015 season. He recorded 51 receptions for 528 yards and three touchdowns in his first season with the team.
