Hoffman has announced that he will join USL expansion Birmingham Legion FC on January 1, 2019.
Jon Chandler Hoffman was born on August 17, 1990, in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. He is the son of Jon Hoffman and Angela Hoffman. He attended the Oak Mountain High School where he played for the high school soccer team leading them to two state championships in 2007 and 2008.
Hoffman joined UCLA where he played college soccer between 2009 and 2011. He was an M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalist, NSCAA Third-team All-American, First-team All-Pac-12 honoree, Second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, First-team Academic All-District and Pac-12 All-Academic during his collegiate career. He played for the USL Premier Development League in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Jon Hoffman was offered a Generation Adidas contract by Major League Soccer after the finish of his junior season at UCLA. He accepted the offer and started his professional career. He was entered in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft where he was picked by Philadelphia Union in the 1st round in 13th overall pick. He became the first player from Alabama to ever be selected in the 1st round of MLS SuperDraft.

Hoffman's professional debut with the Philadelphia Union came on March 31, 2012, as a starting member against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Later on April 20 and 21, Hoffman was loaned to USL Pro club Harrisburg City Islanders for two matches. After playing two games for the City Islanders, he returned to the Philadelphia Union where he played for the rest of the season.

Los Angeles Galaxy acquired Jon Hoffman into their roster on the eve of the 2013 season in exchange for a conditional 2014 MLS SuperDraft pick. He was loaned to the LA Galaxy II in 2014 where he made 17 appearances and scored 13 goals. After the completion of 2013 season, the Galaxy did not renew his contract and he was sent to the 2014 MLS Re-Entry Draft where he was selected by Houston Dynamo on December 18, 2014.

Hoffman played in 5 games of Houston Dynamo for the season and was loaned to Colorado Springs Switchbacks. He was released from the team in 2015. On December 28, 2015, Hoffman joined Louisville City of the United Soccer League. He became the leading scorer for Louisville City in 2016. After the end of 2016 USL season, Hoffman left the Louisville City. He signed with Real Monarchs of United Soccer League on November 17, 2016.
