Gunnar Hoglund is an American college baseball player pitching for the Ole Miss Rebels. He is a potential first-round MLB Draft pick with huge potential. Prior to his injury, he was ranked as the No.5 prospect in the 2021 MLB Draft by ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and No.9 by Baseball America.

High School & College Career

Hoglund enrolled at Datspring Academy in Port Richey, Florida, however, the school does not facilitate any athletic teams, he played baseball for Fivay High School in Hudson, Florida. During his senior season, he was 7–0 with a 0.27 ERA in 2018. 

In the 2018 Major League Draft, he was picked by the Pittsburg Pirates. However, he did not sign and went on to attend the University of Mississippi and play college basketball for the Ole Miss Rebels. 

As a freshman at Ole Miss, he played in 17 games, making 16 starts and made  3-3 with a 5.29 ERA, striking out 53 and walking 14 in 68 innings in 2019.

The following season, he went 3-0 with a 1.16 ERA and 37 strikeouts over 23+1⁄3 innings before the season was ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, in his junior season, he had 11 starts, he pitched 62+2⁄3 innings, striking out 96 batters while going 4-2 with a 2.87 ERA. 

Gunnar Hoglund Won't Pitch In 2021 Season Due To Injury

Reportedly, Hoglund's collegiate career at Ole Miss likely comes to an end with his elbow injury. On 18th May 2021, he underwent surgery by surgeon Dr. James Andrews. The recovery rate from Tommy John's surgery is high (80-90%) but the rehab process is arduous. Hoglund tends to take 12-14 months to recover from the injury. That means he is likely to not starts his Minor League career until late in the 2022 season.
