Eric Wynalda started his professional career with San Diego Nomads in 1988. While playing with San Diego Nomads, he was loaned to San Francisco Bay Blackhawks and played six games with them as a forward. From 1992 to 1994, he played for FC Saarbrucken. At Saarbrucken, he was the first American-born player to play for a German Club. From 1994 to 1996, he played for VFL Bochum. While playing with VFL Bochum, he scored four goals in 29 matches.

Eric Wynalda grew up in Westlake Village, California. He is the son of Dave Wynalda. His father was a great soccer player of his time. His father won the state championship in AYSO soccer. He attended Westlake High School, where he played soccer for the Westlake youth club. Later on, he enrolled at San Diego State University. At San Diego, he played for the Aztec men’s soccer team from 1987 to 1989. During his three seasons, he scored 34 goals.
Eric Wynalda married his longtime girlfriend Amy Wynalda after a 4 years affair with her. Their married did not sustain long. Currently, they are not living together.
