After he signed a contract, the Royals set apart him to Gulf Coast Royals of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. A natural right handed hitter, the rookie trained to bat left-handed. Although it was difficult task, his hardworking performance made him good at switching bat. In 1996, after his impressive game he was able to play Class A-Short Season Northwest League and the Lansing Lugnuts of the Class A-Midwest League for the Spokane Indians. Then he spent the entire season playing for the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League in 1997. In 1998 he received a promotion to the Wichita Wranglers of the Class AA Texas league.
