He started his professional NHL career with New York Rangers in 1988. He is well-known for his time as a scoring star with the Chicago Blackhawks and for representing the United States in Intl. games. He made his debut in Calder Trophy. He played three seasons with the Rangers. He scored 84 goals before being acquired by Chicago Blackhawks. He earned huge stardom while playing with Chicago Blackhawks.

He played five seasons with the Blackhawks and did not miss a single game in 5 seasons. With his remarkable performance, the team in the USA won Gold Medal in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey tournament. He began the 2002-03 seasons with the Phoenix Coyotes and later was picked by the Philadelphia Flyers. On August 2, 2005, he scored 400 NHL goals while playing against the Ottawa Senators. Amonte played in five NHL All-Star games in his entire NFL career from 1997 until 2001.
