Teddy attended Northwestern High School, where he started playing as a quarterback for the high school team. He replaced Jacory Harris as starting quarterback and took over a team that had been named the 2007 national champions by USA Today during his second year in the high school. He completed 97 of 160 attempts for 1,560 yards throwing 16 touchdowns with three interceptions over the season.

He passed 2,546 yards and 32 touchdowns rushing for 379 yards and five more scores during his junior year. He completed 19 of 24 passes for 327 yards and a Dade County record for 7 touchdowns in a match against Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School. Miami Herald named him second-team All-State for 6A classification and first-team All-County.

Despite missing parts of the season with a medial collateral ligament injury, he had 2,606 passing yards and 22 touchdowns during his senior year. Rivals.com considered him the sixth-best dual-threat quarterback prospect in the nation. He has also played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in 2011.

He moved to the University of Louisville after completing his high school education career. He made his entrance as a freshman in the season as a backup but started the Cardinals' fourth game of the season against Marshall remaining the starter for the rest of the year.
