Ivanovic was born in Belgrade, present day Serbia to a business man father and a lawyer mother. She used to watch tennis from a very early age. She used to train in an abandoned swimming pool due to lack of tennis facilities.
Ivanovic started training when she was 10-11 years old. She reached the final of Junior Wimbledon tournament in 2004. Ivanovic defeated Venus Williams in two tiebreak sets of the Zürich Open 2004 and eventually lost in straight sets in the second round. Ivanovic won her first singles title in 2005 at the Canberra International by defeating Melinda Cznik in the final. 2006 was breakthrough year for Ivanovic as the pair of Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic reached the final of Hopman Cup. Ivanovic defeated Amélie Mauresmo at the Medibank International, Sydney and she also reached to the 3rd round of French Open and 4th round of Wimbeldon in the year 2006. Ivanovic defeated former world's No. 1 Martina Hinings in the final of Rogers Cup 2006. The year 2008 was also good for Ivanovic as she won French Open Championship by defeating Maria Sharapova in the final. Based on her performances, her ranking rose to No. 1 in 9th of June, 2008. Ivanovic tasted several defeats throughout the year 2009. In the year 2010, she lost in second round of Australian Open. Ivanovic dropped out of top 50 in the year 2010. In an interview, when asked about her dropping out of top 50, she said that, she has learned a lot more about herself in those dark periods. She suffered four consecutive losses in Indian Wells for the first time on her career in that year. The pair of Ivanovic and Djokovic reached in the final of 2011 Hopman Cup, however she sustained an injury during a match and her team Serbia was forced to withdraw from the tournament. Ivanovic remained inconsistent throughout most of 2012 and 2013. However she started the year 2014 well by winning Auckland Open. She also won Monterrey Open, Aegon Classic and the Pan Pacific Open in 2014 and qualified for 2014 WTA Tour Championships. Her world ranking at the end of 2014 was No. 5. She reached to the semifinals of 2015 French Open. Ivanovic studies Finance in a university in Belgrade.
In 2007, Ivanovic became UNICEF National Ambassador for Serbia. She wants to be engaged in social activities. She is currently girlfriend of German footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger. As of 2015, the couple are not married and do not have any children yet. Before dating Schweinsteiger, she used to date Ivan Paunic. Ivanovic has never been divorced in her life.
Ivanovic is known for her quality forehands. She is 6 ft tall and is 69 kg. Throughout her career, Ivanovic has won 1 French Open Championship and reached the final of Australian Open 2008. She has won several individual awards such as German Tennis Magazine Michael Westphal Award (2008), Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Humanitarian Award (2009), Best Female Tennis Player in Serbia (2012) and many more. She has also qualified for the annual WTA Tour Championships 3 times,and has won the WTA Tournament of Champions twice in 2010 and 2011.
